What to Expect When Working With a Private Household Staffing Agency: A Candidate’s Guide

Working With a Private Staffing Agency

If you’re an experienced estate manager, private chef, nanny, house manager, or household professional considering your next opportunity, working with a private staffing agency is a very different experience than applying to a typical job posting. Here’s what that process actually looks like, and how to make the most of it.

It Starts With a Real Conversation, Not Just a Résumé

A reputable agency isn’t simply matching keywords on a résumé to a job description. Expect an in-depth conversation about your experience, your working style, the type of household or family you thrive with, and what you’re looking for in your next role: schedule, compensation expectations, live-in versus live-out, and long-term career goals.

This conversation matters because private service placements are built around fit, not just qualifications. A candidate who excels in a fast-paced, multi-property estate might be a poor match for a quieter, single-family home, and vice versa. Being candid in this conversation is what leads to a placement that actually lasts.

Expect Thorough Vetting, and Treat It as a Sign of a Legitimate Agency

Be prepared for a genuinely rigorous screening process: background checks, reference verification, employment history confirmation, and sometimes skills assessments depending on the role (culinary trials for chef positions, driving record review for chauffeur roles, and so on).

This can feel like a lot of process compared to informal hiring channels. It’s worth understanding why it matters: families place enormous trust in the professionals who come into their homes, and agencies that skip this step are usually not the ones building long-term, well-matched placements, for you or for the household.

Understanding Discretion and Confidentiality Expectations

Private service comes with a different standard of confidentiality than most other professions. You may be asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement, and you should expect that the families you work with value discretion highly, about their home, their routines, their family matters, and often their identity.

A good agency will talk you through what this means in practice before you’re ever placed, not after. If confidentiality expectations are unclear, ask directly, this is a normal and expected part of the process, not an overstep.

The Presentation and Interview Stage

Once your profile matches an active opportunity, the agency will typically present your background to the family (often without revealing identifying details of either party initially, to protect confidentiality on both sides). If there’s mutual interest, expect one or more interviews, sometimes in person, sometimes including a working trial for hands-on roles like private chef or nanny positions.

After Placement: Ongoing Support

A quality agency doesn’t disappear once you accept a position. Expect periodic check-ins during the initial transition period, and a point of contact you can reach out to if questions or concerns arise on either side. This ongoing relationship is part of what distinguishes a genuine placement partner from a one-time job board.

Why Working With an Agency Can Open Doors Informal Searches Can’t

Many of the best opportunities in private service are never posted publicly. They’re filled through trusted networks and established agency relationships, precisely because families value discretion in their hiring process the same way they expect it from their staff. Building a relationship with a reputable agency puts you in consideration for these opportunities long before they’d ever appear on a general job board.
