Background Checks, References, and Vetting: What a Reputable Household Staffing Agency Actually Checks

How We Vet Household Staff Background Checks & References

“Thorough vetting” is a phrase every staffing agency uses. For families inviting someone into their home, often around their children, their valuables, and their daily privacy, it’s a phrase that deserves more than a bullet point. What does vetting actually involve, and how do you know if an agency is doing the real work behind the promise?

Here’s a look at what genuine, in-depth screening involves for household and estate staff placements.

Comprehensive Background Screening

At minimum, this should include:

  • Criminal history checks at the county, state, and federal level, not just a single national database search, which can miss local records
  • Sex offender registry checks in every state and county where the candidate has lived
  • Motor vehicle records, particularly critical for any candidate who will be driving family members, including children
  • Identity and Social Security number verification, to confirm the candidate is who they claim to be
  • Credit history review, in cases where the role involves handling household finances or purchasing on the family’s behalf

Employment and Education Verification

Résumés in private service can be difficult to verify because much of the work happens behind closed doors, with limited public record. A rigorous process involves:

  • Directly contacting former employers, not just checking a listed reference, but confirming employment dates, responsibilities, and reasons for departure
  • Verifying any claimed certifications (culinary training, newborn care credentials, security or defensive driving certifications, etc.)
  • Cross-referencing employment gaps and asking candidates to account for them directly

In-Depth Reference Interviews

A phone call that confirms “yes, they worked here” tells you very little. Meaningful reference checks ask specific, behavioral questions:

  • How did this person handle a high-pressure situation or a mistake?
  • Would you rehire them, and why or why not?
  • How did they handle confidential information or sensitive family matters?
  • What is one area where they could improve?

These conversations often reveal far more than a written reference letter ever could.

In-Person or Video Interviews, Sometimes More Than One

Private service is as much about interpersonal fit and discretion as it is about technical skill. A single interview rarely captures this. Multiple conversations, sometimes including a working interview or trial period where appropriate, help confirm that a candidate’s presentation matches their day-to-day conduct.

Why This Level of Diligence Matters

Families considering informal hiring channels, a referral from a friend, an online marketplace, a classified ad, often don’t have access to this depth of screening. The risk isn’t hypothetical: a poorly vetted hire can mean anything from a mismatch in professionalism to a genuine safety concern for children, valuables, or the family’s privacy.

At Maison Alder Staffing, every candidate we present has been through in-depth interviews, verified references, and comprehensive background screening before a family ever meets them. It’s not a line item, it’s the foundation of how we build trust with the families and estates we serve.
